Risk and Rumours in Global Health: The case of vaccines
Dr Heidi Larson will deliver this talk entitled 'Risk and Rumours in Global Health: The case of vaccines'
More than most other health interventions, vaccines provoke anxiety, perceptions of risk and rumours. Vaccines are regulated鈥 and sometimes mandated鈥 by government, resisted by those who feel their personal freedoms are imposed on. They are also produced by the pharmaceutical industry, which 鈥 even in their most generous and humanity-driven moments 鈥 aim to generate profit, provoking public concerns about their motives. All this, is the challenging context for a health intervention that has proven decades of success in saving millions of lives and preventing disease and disability.
Heidi Larson, PhD, is Professor of Anthropology, Risk and Decision Science and Director of The Vaccine Confidence Project at LSHTM.
The Global Health Lecture Series is held every Monday during the first two terms, with the exception of Reading Weeks. Leading experts from the School present up-to-date summaries and debates about a range of global health issues. Each lecture is 45-60 minutes, followed by Q&A, and they are open to all students as well as anyone interested in learning more about global health.
Please note the lectures are very popular, so you are advised to arrive early.
Session recordings are made available in the Panopto block on the top right of the Global Health Series Moodle.
