Determinants of asthma and allergies in Latin America
A summary of 20 years of research on asthma and allergies in Latin America
In this talk, Professor Camila Figueiredo will present a summary of 20 years of research on asthma and allergies in Latin America, covering both environmental and genetic studies. She will also discuss the new challenges in utilising omics approaches to better characterise asthma phenotypes.
Speakers
Professor Camila A. Figueiredo, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Brazil
Professor Figueiredo’s research has focused primarily on immune regulation and the genetic/epigenetic mechanisms of allergies and asthma, aiming to understand how these factors influence the occurrence and outcomes of these conditions. As well as receiving support from national and state funding agencies within Brazil, she has participated as Co-PI or investigator in projects funded by the Wellcome Trust, NIH, European Research Council and NIHR. She led the immunological cohort of the Wellcome Trust-funded SCAALA study (Social Changes Asthma and Allergy in Latin America), one of the first large Brazilian population-based studies on asthma.
