Aviation, carbon offsetting, and corporate hot air: What can we do about emissions from air travel, and might COVID-19 be a turning point?
In this talk, Dr Roger Tyers explains how aviation has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in terms of greenhouse gas pollution, and how the industry is responding to pressure for it to clean up its act. He takes a closer look at the concept of carbon offsetting and corporate media strategies which are used to justify continued passenger growth and airport expansion, and he proposes alternative policy solutions that might bring air travel back within sustainable limits.
Finally, he discusses how the COVID-19 crisis might be a unique opportunity to implement such solutions, and what might be the consequences for our climate if we waste such an opportunity.
The talk will be followed by Q&A and it is open to anyone who is interested in learning more on this topic and be challenged by it.
