16 days of activism against gender-based violence: PhD and MSc project showcase

Trigger warning: This session will deal with issues including gender and sexual violence and abuse which may be triggering to survivors.

This closing event will highlight the work LSHTM students are doing to tackle gender-based violence, and how current MSc students can get involved. PhD and DrPH candidates from Centre for Maternal, Adolescent, Reproductive, & Child Health (MARCH) and Gender Violence and Health Centre (GVHC) will do Pecha Kucha presentations showcasing their projects. Then a compiled list of available MSc summer projects will be presented, and students will have a final opportunity to connect with researchers and ask questions.  

This session will be moderated by Alice Witt, Research Assistant, LSHTM.  

Programme

Exploring the association between employment disruption during COVID-19 and intimate partner violence among women 

Speaker  

 

Naomi is part of the Health Inequalities Programme at the Medical Research Council Chief Scientist Office of Social and Public Health Sciences Unit. She joined the Unit in 2021 after completing an MSc in Epidemiology from the LSHTM, during which she studied the association between remote working and intimate partner violence. Before this, she studied a BA in Biology at the University of Oxford.  

Access to sexual reproductive health for adolescent intimate partner violence survivors in conflict-affected refugees

Erin Hartman  

Erin studied health policy before practicing as a Registered Nurse and Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner in New York City. She completed an LLM in International Human Rights Law and Practice from the University of York. Her supervisors at LSHTM are Professor Cicely Marston, Dr Ana Maria Buller and Dr Neha Singh. 

The intersection of HIV and gender-based violence among pregnant and postpartum women in Sub-Saharan Africa

Leah’s doctoral research examines the epidemiology of mother-to-child transmission of HIV among pregnant and postpartum women in Sub-Saharan Africa and the impact of violence against women.

Iram Hashmi  

Iram is a medical doctor, and before embarking upon her public health career, she practiced as a clinician in Pakistan. Iram holds an MSc in Health Policy and Management from Aga Khan University, Karachi. Currently, she is a third year DrPH Candidate. 

Developing a prevention intervention for dating violence among young people in India

Devika Gupta is a part-time PhD student at LSHTM. Devika is based out of India, where she works with the Addictions Research Group at Sangath, Goa.  

The structural and social factors affecting the lives and HIV prognosis of female sex workers in Nairobi, Kenya

Pooja’s study is mixed methods and longitudinal and is nested within the larger Maisha Fiti study of women in Nairobi.
