Health and wellbeing for people and planet

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine’s is a pioneering and progressive social enterprise focused on improving the health and socio-economic wellbeing of communities and their local environment in low- and middle-income countries.

A subsidiary of LSHTM, the SCIF is a unique initiative that uses carbon offsetting as a means to deliver solutions, placing transparency at the heart of its service. Unlike other offsetting schemes, the SCIF draws on LSHTM’s expertise in global health to put the health and socio-economic wellbeing of the people who need it most at the forefront of its operations and choices of intervention.

The SCIF aims to:

  • Develop and facilitate community-based initiatives which reduce, ameliorate and avoid the environmental, social and economic effects of climate change on rural communities in low- & middle-income countries (LMICs) through targeted projects and interventions.
  • Foster improvements to the health and wellbeing of communities in LMICs, especially women and girls, by improving access to basic amenities and fostering economic empowerment for a more sustainable, prosperous future.

Working with communities affected by climate change

The SCIF will run a programme of ethical, high-impact projects in areas of sub-Saharan Africa where LSHTM currently has a presence, such as Uganda and The Gambia. We are working in partnership with communities in those countries to find the right solutions for them. Projects in the scheme will be carefully chosen to ensure they deliver on the core aims of bringing health, wellbeing and socio-economic benefits as well as being environmentally-positive.

Underpinned by a rigorous system of independent external verification to achieve compliance with Gold Standard methodologies, the projects will provide carbon credits which LSHTM and other organisations can use to offset their residual carbon footprint.

Offsetting responsibly

Our aim is to help organisations towards achieving ethical and sustainable carbon reduction goals by supporting a SCIF project that offers real social impact for positive change.

Building on our global health knowledge and research on planetary health and the effects of climate change on health, we are committed to sustainable wellbeing for people and planet.

Through the SCIF – which is governed by a Board of Directors – we are committing to carbon offsetting responsibly and with care. This means making sure all activities have a positive, sustainable impact on communities and the environment, as well as measurable emissions reduction.

Join us and make a difference today

We invite organisations who are looking to commit to carbon neutrality and take responsibility for their emissions to join us in this unique social enterprise.
