Interruption or withdrawal of study

Interruption of Studies & Withdrawal Policy

Please read the Interruption of Studies & Withdrawal Policy (as contained in Chapter 7, General Academic Regulations of the LSHTM Academic Manual) prior to submitting a request.

Interruption of Study

An Interruption of Study (IoS) should be requested in unexpected personal, financial or medical situations where a student is temporarily unable to continue their programme of study.

An IoS will not be granted retrospectively, unless there are valid and overriding reasons that prevented the student from applying at the time.

A student's registration is suspended during the entire period of interruption, however they will retain limited access to LSHTM resources.

All students should use the Interruption of Studies Form (docx) - this needs to be printed, signed by the relevant parties and returned to the Registry.

Withdrawal of Study

Students wishing to prematurely end their studies at LSHTM are required to voluntarily withdraw their registration. Once a student withdraws their registration they cannot return to rejoin the programme at a later date, unless they reapply to the School and are accepted to restart the programme.

The effective date of withdrawal may affect the amount of tuition fee liability, as well as eligibility for bursaries, student loans and other benefits.

All students should use the Withdrawal of Studies Form (pdf) - this needs to be printed, signed by the relevant parties and returned to the Registry.

Tier 4 Student Visa Implications

The School is required to notify the Home Office of any changes to a Tier 4 student's status. If you require any guidance or clarification about whether taking an interruption of study will affect your visa status please contact the School's Immigration Advisory Service.

If you hold a Tier 4 Student visa it is likely that you will be required to leave the UK for the duration of your interruption and re-apply for a new visa in order to return to the UK and continue your studies.
