Isatou Manneh shaping the Library Management System

Since April 2016, MRC Unit The Gambia鈥檚 Librarian Isatou Manneh has been providing Research Information Services to The Unit. Following her appointment, one of Isatou鈥檚 first activites聽was the coordination of the complete renewal of the library which saw its transformation聽into a state-of-the-art Research Information Centre.
Isatou first joined MRCG in 2005 as聽a Data Entry Clerk on attachment聽within the malaria, viral and聽tuberculosis project having聽previously worked as a team leader聽on the National Polio Immunisation聽Campaign at Sukuta Health Centre.聽In 2007, she re-joined The Unit as a Data Entry Clerk and in 2009聽progressed to Research聽Records Assistant. From there, Isatou鈥檚 hard work and聽determination to develop the聽service lead to a natural聽progression to Research Records聽and Library Assistant which聽cumulated in her appointment聽as Trainee Librarian.

From early on Isatou realised聽the importance of her own聽professional development as a聽means to create permanent聽capacity at The Unit and over the聽years embarked on 聽several聽professional development聽courses. These included a聽course on information technology聽at SOS Hermann Gmeiner,聽Quantum Net Institute of聽Technology and online computer聽maintenance as well as distance聽learning via the Open University Australia, Open2Study and聽Future Learn. Isatou鈥檚 most recent project was structuring the library鈥檚 physical聽and electronic collections for which聽she closely collaborated with The Unit鈥檚 Data Management and聽Archives Department. This included聽the development of a customized聽online Library Management System.聽With Isatou鈥檚 input, MRCG鈥檚 team聽of database developers created聽a system that catalogues and聽categorises library resources聽including books, journals, thesis聽and Unit publications.

All materials are now barcoded聽allowing efficient check-out and聽check-in of materials and management of information聽resources. This streamlined聽process is testament to the importance of interdepartmental聽communication and cooperation聽resulting in efficiency gains, costs聽savings and most importantly a聽better service for our research聽community.

When asked what she likes most聽about her job, Isatou responded,聽鈥淚 take great pride in giving direct聽support to my colleagues and聽knowing that the information I聽provide contributes to research聽that saves life鈥.

Isatou now oversees a widely聽used and highly functional聽Research Information Centre frequented by a large number of聽students, researchers and other聽Unit staff on a daily basis. By聽developing and tirelessly聽ensuring compliance with the聽library鈥檚 process and code of聽conduct, she ensures that the聽Research Information Centre聽remains central in MRCG鈥檚 drive聽to develop the local knowledge聽base and talent.

According to Jonas Lexow,聽Research Governance & Support聽Services Manager, 鈥淪eeing the聽library being transformed into聽this exceptional space for聽research and study is truly impressive. Thanks to Isatou and聽the team at Data Management聽and Archives, we now have an聽electronic system that聽complements and completes聽this state-of-the-art Research Information Centre which will聽benefit the current and future聽generations of Gambian and聽international researchers alike鈥.
