Professor Martin Antonio shaping state-of-the-art methodologies available to African investigators and research sites in Africa

Professor Martin Antonio is the leader of the molecular biology group at the MRC Unit The Gambia and was recently awarded an honorary professorship at the Division of Microbiology & Immunity, Warwick Medical School, Coventry, UK. Prof Antonio is also the Director of聽WHO Regional Reference聽Laboratory for Invasive Bacterial聽Diseases and the MRC Programme聽Leader-Track at MRCG.聽Originally from Ghana, Martin聽trained in molecular microbiology聽in the UK and set up the molecular聽microbiology research group in聽2005, when he was first聽appointed at MRCG. Since then,聽Martin was instrumental in聽establishing the molecular聽capabilities at The Unit. Martin鈥檚聽research is focused on the leverage聽of new molecular technologies in聽diagnosis of tropical infections,
investigation of microbial聽transmission and clinical trials.

Martin鈥檚 group has led and聽participated in a growing number of聽large-scale international research聽projects, investigating the aetiology聽of pneumonia, diarrhoea, serving as
the WHO reference laboratory for聽pneumococcal disease and聽establishing large disease
surveillance platforms for bacterial聽infections across Africa.

Part of the Vaccines & Immunity聽Theme, Martin is an outstanding聽networker in science with
collaborations across the globe聽with a keen determination to make聽state-of-the-art methodologies聽available to African investigators聽and research sites in Africa. He is
