The 5-year transition of Mamadou from Laboratory Technician to Trainee Scientific Officer

Mamadou Jallow joined the MRC Unit The Gambia fresh from high school in 2011 as a Trainee Laboratory Technician in the Clinical Laboratories. A year later, he was promoted to the聽position of Laboratory Technician and awarded a scholarship to undertake the Foundation degree in Biomedical Science with St.聽George鈥檚 University in London by distance learning.Through hard聽work and support from the Clinical Laboratories team, he graduated聽with distinction in June 2015. Being聽one of the best graduating students聽for the year, he was sponsored for聽full-time BSc degree in Biomedical聽Science at Kingston University, London. Mamadou demonstrated聽that hard work pays off as he聽graduated with first class honours聽in June 2016.聽He has since resumed as a聽Trainee Scientific Officer in the聽Clinical Laboratories adding to the聽excellent pool of skilled personnel in聽Laboratory Services.

The knowledge聽acquired through his degree has聽been particularly helpful in聽strengthening the clinical microbiology platform, in the areas聽of bacteriology and parasitology.The knowledge聽acquired through his degree has聽been particularly helpful in聽strengthening the clinical microbiology platform, in the areas聽of bacteriology and parasitology.Mamadou鈥檚 training is an added聽boost to the clinical labs quality聽management system and will聽contribute to sustaining the聽ISO15189 accreditation status of the laboratory.

Mamadou鈥檚 career progression is聽another example of the success聽story of MRCG鈥檚 strategy of聽identifying, training and preparing聽indigenous talent for key roles that聽support our track record for聽excellent research. The transition聽from Laboratory Technician to聽Trainee Scientific Officer, with a first聽class honours degree in Biomedical聽Science, happened within a 5-year聽period of May 2011 to August 2016.
