The department focuses on diseases of public health importance in resource constrained settings, and has particular strengths in research on malaria and other causes of fever, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), mycobacterial diseases (tuberculosis and leprosy), eye health, neglected tropical diseases (such as trachoma and schistosomiasis) and travel medicine. The research is multidisciplinary, extending from basic laboratory science (immunology and molecular biology) through to clinical medicine, epidemiology, public health, social science and health economics. The department has participated in Ebola vaccine trials in Africa, research on the Zika virus epidemic and its sequelae in Brazil, and more currently on research on clinical and epidemiological aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and in other (re)emerging infections.
