What can we learn about health system resilience from country responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic? A comparative study of Kenya and South Africa

Stay at home poster in an empty street

Health system resilience gained global attention following the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa (2014-2016). The global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has only further reinforced the importance of health system resilience to acute shocks. Current debates about health system resilience remain, however, primarily conceptual, with only limited empirical work across sectors (Barasa et al. 2018) and little evidence that can be turned into practical ideas about how to strengthen health systems through nurturing resilience.

This webinar will provide initial findings from a joint research project conducted by the University of Cape Town, KEMRI Wellcome Trust and the Robert Koch-Institute in Berlin, which sought to:

  • Build on, and further develop, an existing framework for understanding health system resilience (Gibson et al. 2017, 2020; Kagwanja et al. 2020) to allow assessment of the resilience of public health systems.
  • Conduct an initial assessment to understand how the Kenyan and South African public health system responded during COVID-19 and what learnings are generated about the resilience of public health systems.

This session is jointly organised by the and LSHTM Berlin Office
