Social science in the study of heath inequities: discussing theories, methods and interventions
Providing a platform to begin revising theories, methodologies and interventions used in Public Health research and practice
This interactive seminar will provide a platform to begin revising theories, methods and interventions used in public health research and practice to address health inequities across different disciplines and regions of the world. It will explore common themes, shared values, epistemological specificities (how knowledge is produced) through theoretical/practical accounts based on Dr Natalia Luxardo’s own experiences of cancer studies carried out in South America.
The seminar will compare theoretical concepts used in research practice for a long time to account for health inequities. The seminar will consider these concepts through three perspectives: medical anthropology, social epidemiology and Latin America social medicine/collective health; with the possibility of adapting the discussion based on audience interests.
This seminar will cover the following topics, with attendee participation and interactive discussion encouraged:
- The role of social science in the study of health inequities: a historical quick review
- Health inequity concerns in higher- and lower-income countries
- Specific theories, methodologies and traditions: what they address or overlook
- Opportunities to strengthen the field (audience participation encouraged)
Speaker
Dr Natalia Luxardo, CONICET & University of Buenos Aires
Dr Natalia Luxardo is a social worker with a PhD in Social Sciences and in Culture. She is a principal researcher (CONICET) at Instituto de Investigaciones Gino Germani and a professor in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
