The COVID-19 pandemic is the most severe crisis many Western societies have faced since World War II. Near the beginning of the pandemic, Professor Michael Bang Petersen became the director of a large-scale social science project to understand how the pandemic influenced Western democracies, which simultaneously gained a prominent role in the Danish government and media response.

In this talk, Professor Michael Bang Petersen will weave together a series of articles examining how the pandemic fuelled radicalisation, condemnation and polarisation across Western countries and beyond. He will then cover how we may avoid similar outcomes in the face of, for example, increasing international and climate-related tensions.
