Don’t ask if you don’t want the answer: A career in violence research

Karen Devries has spent her career researching the social epidemiology of sensitive topics, including sexual health and violence against women and children.

Karen Devries will reflect on her academic journey, including research on the global prevalence of intimate partner violence against women; how we can ask children about violence while ensuring their safety; and intervention trials testing ways we can stop violence.

Professor Karen Devries, LSHTM

Karen Devries is Professor of Social Epidemiology at LSHTM. She completed her PhD in Epidemiology in 2007, which was focused on sexual health, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship focused on violence against women and suicide risk. From 2010-2012 she was based in Uganda with the NGO Raising Voices, collaborating on several violence prevention intervention trials. She currently leads the Child Protection Research Group, and collaborates with colleagues on a range of studies on violence in childhood, examining the causes and consequences of violence, testing ways to prevent it, and testing methods to do this research safely.
