Two clinical research laboratories based in Entebbe and Masaka districts have been ranked among the top five in Africa by the (IAVI). The high tech facilities were founded by the Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute/London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (MRC/UVRI/LSHTM) Uganda research unit, to contribute to efforts in increasing efficiency of disease diagnosis, treatment and surveillance programmes across the country and international research projects.
Since their establishment, the laboratories have been equipped with sophisticated technology and manned by skilled scientific research specialists that have successfully conducted varied and complex investigations into prevention, response and management mechanisms for HIV, non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and malaria, among others and most recently, vaccine research for epidemics and pandemics such as Ebola, Marburg and COVID-19.
Using state of the art technology such as the Beckman AutoMate 2550 sample processing system, the MRC/UVRI/LSHTM laboratories in Entebbe and Masaka effectively provide clinical services to reputable medical facilities and establishments across Uganda such as , Emergency Hospital Laboratory and Mbarara Eye Care Project in Mbarara Hospital, to manage day-to-day research on emerging issues in their communities.
