LSHTM marks the death of Her Majesty The Queen

Her Majesty supported work on global health during her 70-year reign.

It is with deep regret and sadness that we mark the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

As an institution incorporated by Royal Charter, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) operates under the Royal Charter signed by Her Majesty, and has a long and valuable relationship with the Royal Family. This included having Prince Philip as our Patron from 1952 right up until his death last year, and a number of visits to LSHTM and MRC Units in Uganda and The Gambia by members of the Royal Family in recent years including Prince Charles, Prince Harry, and the Countess of Wessex.

Three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education have also been awarded to LSHTM, for eye health – which members of staff received from Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace in 2006 – and more recently for our responses to both Ebola and COVID-19. Students based at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Unit The Gambia at LSHTM also recently won top prize in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Student Challenge for their innovative recycling solution.

LSHTM Director Professor Liam Smeeth has sent a letter of condolence to His Majesty The King on behalf of LSHTM expressing sympathy and gratitude for Her Majesty’s service.

He said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen.

“We are extremely grateful to Her Majesty for her many years of devoted service. Our School was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1924 and has benefited enormously over the years from Her Majesty’s support and interest in our work in global health education and research.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with you and the Royal Family at this extremely difficult time.”
