Women in Health Lecture 2021: Dr Ayoade Olatunbosun-Alakija
Our prestigious annual Women in Health lecture highlights the work of leading women in health, research and policy worldwide. The lecture is held in March to coincide with International Women’s Day and is given by women who have made a significant contribution to global health research and policy during their careers.
Women at the forefront of global leadership in an era of COVID
Dr Ayoade Olatunbosun-Alakija will be delivering this year’s lecture where she will discuss why gender equity is the answer in her talk entitled “women at the forefront of global leadership in an era of COVID”. The session will be followed by an informal discussion and Q&A about her career and journey to becoming the Co-Chair of the Africa Union Africa Vaccine Delivery Alliance for Covid (AVDA).
Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, gender equity and the role of women in global health leadership was a very topical issue. COVID-19 has brought this issue to the fore, and women across the world have shown exemplary leadership across political and scientific levels and on the front lines. Issues around women's leadership remain, but this era has shown that when faced with a once in a generation event, gender equity is the answer - and it is critical for all hands to be on deck for humanity to truly thrive. The challenge before us all is to ensure that the lessons learned from this pandemic will be applied to advance women’s leadership and create positive health outcomes for women and girls worldwide.
