This annual lecture is organised in honour of the life and work of . Steve was Professor of Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and an active member of the  and worked closely with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where he was based from 2005 to 2012.  Steve worked tirelessly to improve the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis among people living with HIV/AIDS. He authored over 250 publications and received many awards.

This year’s memorial lecture will be delivered by Professor Graeme Meintjes. The event is open to all, and the key audience includes academics with an interest in HIV and tuberculosis, immunologists, clinical trialists and clinicians.

Speaker

is an Infectious Diseases Physician and the Second Chair and Deputy Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He also holds the SARChI Chair of Poverty-related Infections. He was previously the joint head of a busy infectious diseases referral service at GF Jooste Hospital in Cape Town and currently undertakes consultant clinical work at Khayelitsha and Groote Schuur Hospitals. He has contributed to the development of management guidelines for HIV and TB at a provincial, national and international level. His research focus areas include HIV-associated TB, the immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome, cryptococcal meningitis and drug-resistant TB. He has 280 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has been an author or co-author on 12 book chapters.

Prize winners of the Stephen Lawn TB-HIV Research Leadership Prize awards for 2019 () and 2020 (Dr Nicole Salazar-Austin) were awarded by IUALTD and will join this event.

This event is organized jointly by the LSHTM TB Centre and the Desmond Tutu Centre at UCT, in partnership with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union), and supported by The Lancet.
