Special guest lecture | Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention – a new approach to the control of malaria in the Sahel and sub-Sahelian regions of Africa

Special guest lecture from Dr Alassane Dicko, 2017 Royal Society Africa Prize winner

The Royal Society Africa Prize recognises research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the biological sciences, including basic medical science, which contributes significantly to capacity building in Africa.

The 2017 Africa Prize is awarded to Dr Alassane Dicko for his contribution to research into malaria control, in particular using intermittent administration of medicines to children in the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention strategy recommended by WHO.

This evening lecture will celebrate Dr Dicko's work and explore related research.

Speaker's background:

Alassane Dicko is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and  Dentistry, the University of Sciences Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, Mali and a Programme Leader at the Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC), Bamako, Mali.

Following his initial medical training at the University of Bamako, Professor Dicko joined MRTC as a junior researcher in 1993 and he has spent the rest of his career at this centre with the exception of a three-year fellowship (1998-2001) at NIAD/NIH, Bethesda, USA. He obtained an MSc in epidemiology from the University of Maryland in 2001 and a PhD from the University of Bordeaux in 2010.

The main focus of Professor Dicko’s research has been the prevention of malaria in areas where malaria transmission is highly seasonal, such as Mali, using drugs for vaccines. He has been a pioneer in the development of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention, a control measure now being deployed widely in many countries of the Sahel and sub-Sahel where malaria transmission is highly season.
