Series Launch: Who Cares for Women?

Enormous gaps in maternal healthcare coverage remain at the end of the MDG-era, despite these areas being declared global and national health priorities. Many women are accessing neither public- nor private-sector services and this is more acute for the poorest women, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

In the context of the Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, our series launch Who cares for women? will include presentations of the most up-to-date and extensive analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys across 57 low- and middle-income countries to assess the state of the market for maternal healthcare and family planning. This new analysis reveals the substantial role – often overlooked by academics and government policy – of the private sector in delivering care, and has important implications for widening access to good quality care for all women.

The series will be introduced by the Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Prof. Peter Piot, with contributions from leading experts from the School including Prof. Anne Mills and Prof. Oona Campbell.

Presentations will be followed by discussion of the findings and the role of the private sector, with panelists including:

Prof. Anthony Costello Director, Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health, World Health Organization

Dr. David Chiriboga Assistant Professor, University of Massachusetts Medical School; former Minister of Public Health for Ecuador; former President of the Council of Health Ministers of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR)

Prof. Anne Mills Deputy Director & Provost and Professor of Health Economics and Policy, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Followed by a reception.
