‘Restoring Dignity’: Noma and Careers with MSF
Are you interested working with MSF as a Nurse, Midwife, Mental Health Officer, Health Promoter or Communications Officer?
LSHTM Friends of MSF will be screening ‘Restoring Dignity’, a documentary by French filmmakers Claire Jeantet and Fabrice Catérini, produced by Inediz in collaboration with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Around 50 minutes long, it follows the journey of noma survivors and the MSF reconstructive surgery project in Sokoto, Nigeria.
Following the screening there will be a couple of short talks from MSF staff who have worked on the project in Sokoto. An MSF Field HR Officer for the above specialisms will also be attending to answer any questions you have.
Speakers:
Dr Tamara Banerjee is a locum Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine consultant and the Royal Free Hospital. She has completed missions with MSF in Syria and South Sudan. Most recently, Tamara and , a nurse and alumna of LSHTM, have returned from a mission with the Noma project in Nigeria.
‘Restoring Dignity’
Noma mostly affects children under five years old living in poverty. An opportunistic infection, it takes just days for noma to leave survivors with severe facial disfigurements that make it hard to eat, speak or breathe. Without treatment, around 90% of people affected by noma die within the first two weeks.
“By sharing their stories with dignity, the people in this documentary help us father a visual diary of physical and psychological consequences that shouldn’t exist,” explain Claire and Fabrice in a Director’s letter.
