Providing Healthcare during conflict: Experiences from the crisis in Mosul, Iraq

Summary: Described as the deadliest urban conflict since World War II, the battle to retake Mosul from the so called Islamic State triggered a complex humanitarian crisis. This necessitated innovative approaches to health care delivery and coordination between both traditional and novel actors.  Chrissy will share and discuss these approaches as well as the challenges and rewards that she experienced whilst coordinating and leading the WHO commissioned Trauma Field Hospital in Mosul.

Bio: Chrissy Alcock specialises in International Humanitarian Emergencies. These have covered a wide spectrum of environments and contexts ranging from conflicts in the Middle East, sudden onset disasters in Asia and public health emergencies in Africa. She helped to coordinate the UK response to the Nepal and Ecuador Earthquakes, the Gaza Conflict and the UK NHS overseas deployment to the Ebola Treatment Centres in Sierra Leone.

Most recently, she has worked with the WHO Regional Centre for Environmental Health Action to deliver Chemical Exposure Trauma Care courses in Jordan, Northern Iraq, Egypt, Oman and Sudan.
