Protecting Children with Disabilities from Violence
A Joint Seminar by the International Centre for Evidence in Disability and the Gender, Violence and Health Centre
"If he could speak, he would be able to point out who does those things to him”: Protecting children with disabilities from violence
There is increasing evidence that children with disabilities may be at higher risk of violence compared to their peers without disabilities. However, little is known about the extent to which children with disabilities are included in child protection mechanisms – which are an essential part of any country’s response efforts to address and prevent child maltreatment. This seminar describes findings of a study commissioned by Plan International, which includes qualitative research in Uganda and Malawi on barriers and enablers to access as well as a quantitative analysis on whether children with disabilities are being included in an intervention to reduce violence in schools through “The Good School Toolkit” in Uganda.
