Making the Invisible, Visible

Professor Andrew Bastawrous OBE will deliver his inaugural lecture where he will discuss his life and career from a young boy with vision impairment to becoming an eye surgeon, a professor and a co-founder of various social enterprises.

Professor Andrew Bastawrous OBE joined LSHTM in 2011 from the NHS where he was working as an eye surgeon. He undertook a PhD in Kenya with LSHTM's International Centre for Eye Health where he continues to work and lead a research and teaching portfolio. At the age of 12, struggling with vision impairment a pair of glasses changed the trajectory of Andrew's life and gave him vision and "a vision". Since joining LSHTM, he has also co-founded a social enterprise, Peek Vision, which uses technology to identify and connect millions of people living with eye health issues to the care they need, strengthening the underlying health systems that support this delivery. He has also co-founded an innovative catalyst fund for vision which has recently made a grant to LSHTM. Andrew has also co-founded social enterprise bakeries, collaborated with astrophysicists, data scientists, and artists, and worked with Heads of Government and leading global figures with the ambition to see an end to untreated vision loss.
