This event will screen Ke Mo Leseding (Into the light), a film about an intimate and inspirational journey that outlines the story of Stanley Monageng, a 72 year old HIV activist. A message to the people of Botswana, the film tells the story of Stanley’s determination to walk over 370 kilometres in just eleven days to provide HIV/AIDS education to the most remote parts of the country.

The film features testament from HIV activists, doctors, political leaders, and community members all pleading Batswana to test and treat for HIV.

Following the film, we will have a Q&A session with Stanley and the filmmakers.

Speakers

Paul O’Brien, Filmmaker

Paul O’Brien is a veteran award winning filmmaker. Previously, Paul served in the U.S Peace Corps where he became involved in the Ke Mo Leseding film. Paul serves as the films lead director and editor, and has been instrumental in its creation.

Isaac Devoid, Health Policy Analyst 

Isaac Devoid is a health policy analyst, and formerly a MSc Public Health student at LSHTM. During Isaac’s service in the U.S Peace Corps, he worked closely with Stanley on grassroots HIV interventions. For Ke Mo Leseding, Isaac serves as the Executive Producer involved in messaging and marketing of the film.

Stanley Monageng, HIV Activist

Stanley Monageng is one of the most dynamic and inspiring HIV activists in Botswana. As the first male nurse in Botswana, Stanley had to stop working because his patients often refused his services due to his HIV status. After experiencing and witnessing the stigma and discrimination that people around the world were living with, Stanley began his career as an activist in the early 2000’s after speaking publicly on the radio. Afterwards, Stanley started an NGO “Thusang Bana Centre”, that aims to support at risk populations in HIV prevention and support. Stanley has worked closely with the President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in designing and implementing interventions, and serves as a Treat All Champion where he promotes regular testing and adherence to treatment throughout Botswana. In this role, he appeared as a film star in the U.S embassy production “Have it All”. Additionally, Stanley serves on the Board of Botswana Network of People Living with AIDS (BONEPWA).
