In recent years the treatment of acute malnutrition has progressed from an inpatient model in a few countries, to a global public health outpatient service that treats millions of people every year. This was made possible with Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programmes, however in order to scale up this model to treat more patients new wider strategies are needed.

Dr Jose Luis Alvarez, Senior Technical Advisor from Action Against Hunger will be presenting the orgnisation’s evidence-based research experiences from randomized controlled trials and cohort studies in Pakistan and Mali to demonstrate how an approach focused on community programmes increases the proportion of severely malnourished children that are treated globally whilst maintaining performance, quality of care and being cost effective.

The lecture will share the latest results of the trial and discuss the potential of scaling up CMAM or similar programmes. It will also examine how this could transform the current service delivery model and improve access to treatment by empowering community health workers to play a more direct role in tackling severe acute malnutrition.

Funded by the innocent foundation, the research has provided key learnings to shape the national healthcare protocol in Mali and with other countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Niger and Sierra Leone seeking to imoplement similar approaches, we hope that, with your help, we will see many more adopting the model.

The lecture will also include a brief introduction by Amy Mayberry, Head of Evidence at Action Against Hunger to â€˜No Wasted Lives’ a major initiative which aims to scale up treatment of severe malnutrition.

We hope you are able to make it.
