Global Early Adolescent Study

The MARCH Adolescent theme and the Population Studies Group invite you to a lunchtime seminar with Professor Robert Blum.

Professor Blum is the William H Gates Sr Professor and Chair of the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He has led instrumental research on adolescent sexuality and international adolescent health care issues.

Professor Blum will present the Global Early Adolescent Study (GEAS), a 15-country study designed to understand factors in early adolescence that predispose young people to sexual health risks. The ages 10 to 14 are among the most critical for human development, yet one of the most poorly understood stages of the life course. While biological processes are universal, the social contexts within which they occur vary considerably. During this transition, young people are expected to assume socially defined gender roles that shape their sexual and reproductive health future. GEAS will offer a unique, cross-cultural comparison on the social processes shaping young people's health, with particular attention to the ways gender norms inform adolescent sexuality among urban poor youth.
