Preventing inequality in family formation and reproduction represents a key challenge during periods of societal uncertainty and crises. Recent research indicates that demographic groups with higher resources exhibit more fertility resilience - or less variation in fertility during crises - while lower socioeconomic groups are more vulnerable. The speaker will discuss how different types of crises and uncertainties (climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war in Ukraine) affect the fertility ideals and intentions of young Finnish adults, based on data from two representative surveys in Finland conducted in 2022.

Anna Rotkirch is the Research Director at the Population Research Institute of Väestöliitto, the Family Federation of Finland. Her research focuses on fertility and childbearing motivations, family relations, and population change in contemporary Europe.
