Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasingly serious threat to global public health that requires action across all government sectors and society. Although it is a natural process, as pathogens evolve in response to their environment, resistance has been accelerated by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in people and animals. Without effective antibiotics, the success of major surgery and cancer chemotherapy, for example, would be compromised; so does AMR mean the end of modern medicine?
