​​CONCORD-4: update on coverage and data collection

The CONCORD programme established world-wide surveillance of trends in cancer survival for the first time in 2015.1 The trends were updated in CONCORD-3, which included patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2014, with follow-up to 31 December 2014.1,2 Data were provided by 322 population-based cancer registries in 71 countries and territories, of which 47 provided data with 100% national population coverage. CONCORD-3 included individual records for over 37.5 million patients diagnosed with one of 18 cancers or haematological malignancies that collectively represented 75% of the global cancer burden in 2014.
Since 2017, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has included survival estimates from the CONCORD programme among the indicators of the effectiveness of health systems in managing cancer in all its Health at a Glance reports.3,4
CONCORD-4 will update and extend the global surveillance of long-term trends in cancer survival. We invited submission of data by population-based cancer registries on patients diagnosed during the 20-year period 2000-2019, with follow-up to 31 December 2019 or later. We will include 22 cancers or groups of cancers that collectively represent 84-90% of all cancers in adults. For the first time, we have invited submission of data on all cancers in children. We will produce international patterns and long-term trends in survival for the 12 major groups of childhood cancer, to support WHO’s , in collaboration with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis TN, USA.
