Community-based management of hypertension in Ghana: A model for NCD control in LMIC

This seminar will present the final results and implications of an innovative integration of hypertension management (ComHIP) into a primary health care program in Ghana. The goal of the study was to improve coverage and control of hypertension by strengthening public and private sector delivery partnerships, task-shifting of treatment from doctors to community nurses, as well as the use of digital technologies to enhance communication with patients and improve the health management information system. The research design comprised of baseline and end-line surveys in intervention and control districts, cohort analysis of patients with hypertension, qualitative surveys and an economic evaluation. The program was funded by the Novartis Foundation and implemented by the Ghana Health Service in partnership with FHI360. The evaluation was conducted by LSHTM and the School of Public Health of the University of Ghana.

This seminar will be presented by Professor Peter Lamptey (LSHTM), Assistant Professor Alma Adler (LSHTM), Dr Francisco Pozo-Martin (LSHTM) and Assistant Professor Amos Laar (University of Ghana).
