Adherence to tuberculosis treatment: a Gordian Knot?

Professor Helen Stagg will discuss alternative approaches to conceptualising adherence to treatment, relationships between non-adherence and treatment outcomes, and more.

Adherence to treatment has historically been considered using simple thresholds in both trials and observational studies. On the basis of percentage thresholds of doses taken patients are deemed to be sufficiently adherent (or not), which can lead to their exclusion from intention to treat analyses. In this talk, Professor Stagg will discuss alternative approaches to conceptualising adherence to treatment, work from her group looking at more detailed relationships between non-adherence and treatment outcomes, describe how and why non-adherence to treatment varies over time, as well as why this could matter for interventions seeking to improve adherence.
