This accessibility statement applies to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine website.

This website is run by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Contact forms: The contact forms (on our student ambassador pages) do not provide an autocomplete attribute and so assistive technologies may not be able to add icons to indicate input type. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.3.5 (identify input purpose). This setup is to ensure that the correct form is presented to the user and that no previous data is unintentionally re-used within it.

Content that is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Document files: Some of our older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value). We do not plan to replace these as non-essential document files published before 23 September 2018 are . Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish are checked and reviewed using Adobe and Microsoft tools to meet accessibility standards.

What we are doing to improve accessibility

How we tested this website

We have assessed the accessibility of this website by the following approaches:

  • External evaluation (Shaw Trust Accessibility Services)

Shaw Trust web accreditation

This website was assessed for over a three-week period from 27 July 2020. This included over 60 hours accessibility testing by people with a wide range of disabilities to highlight barriers that might be present, in order to implement solutions for inclusive content.

We used a sample of 19 pages for the test, reflecting each of our page templates and the full range of content blocks within them. This ensured the widest and most representative scope possible for the sample.

Tests and improvements

This website was tested by means of an accessibility assessment on 21 August 2020. The test was carried out by Shaw Trust.

The following areas were highlighted for attention and addressed by means of fixes by developers and editors in the period from August 2020 - March 2021:

We are taking the following measures to ensure the accessibility of our website:

  • Including accessibility throughout our internal policies, procedures and training.
