Dr Tom Sumner

I am an Assistant Professor in the TB Modelling Group at LSHTM. I am also a member of the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases and the TB Centre. My work focusses on the use of mathematical models to study the epidemiology and control of tuberculosis.

I originally studied Physics and obtained a PhD in Computational Biology from University College London. Prior to joining LSHTM I worked at the Pirbright Institute developing mathematical models to study the spread and control of vector-borne livestock diseases.

Teaching
I am a module organiser and tutor for the distance learning MSc module Modelling and the Dynamics of Infectious Diseases (EPM302). I also teach on the in house MSc programme and the LSHTM Infectious Disease Modelling summer short course.

Research
My research uses mathematical models to study a range of questions about the natural history and control of tuberculosis (TB). My current projects include:

Mathematical modelling of the impact and cost-effectiveness of novel TB vaccines
Macro-economic analysis of the cost of TB in India
Evaluation of the impact of community based TB screening strategies in South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique (XACTIII)
