Associate Professor

CREC/LSHTM Collaborative Research Programme
CREC/LSHTM Laboratory

Corine Ngufor is Associate Professor of medical entomology at LSHTM with several years of field experience in mosquito biology and vector control. She holds a Masters in the Biology and Control of Disease Vectors and a PhD in medical entomology both from LSHTM. Her PhD focused on the use of insecticide combinations to improve the control and management of insecticide resistant African malaria vectors. Corine started working at LSHTM in 2011 supervising and coordinating several WHO Phase I and II vector control studies across sub-saharan Africa (Tanzania, Cote D'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Benin). She is currently based in Benin since 2013 where she is lead scientist and manager of the GLP-certified CREC/LSHTM Collaborative Research Programme () implementing a large portfolio of vector control projects investigating new vector control tools for targeting insecticide resistant malaria vectors in WHO laboratory, semi-field and randomised controlled trials. Corine is a member of the Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG) and Malaria Policy Advisory Group (MPAG) of the World Health Organisation, co-chair of the Vector Control Working Group of the Roll Back Malaria partnership and a member of the External Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) of the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC).

Research

Corine's primary research interest is in the development and evaluation of new vector control tools for improved control and management of insecticide resistant disease vectors of malaria and arboviruses. Corine is the manager and lead scientist of a GLP-certified Facility in Benin which generates high quality efficacy data for vector control product registration to WHO standards. Corine evaluates several types of vector control products mostly LLINs, IRS, repellents, ATSB, larvicides etc in laboratory Phase I studies, Semi-field Phase trials, community Phase III studies and community randomized trials. Corine also performs studies to explore ways in which new vector control products can be optimally deployed in combinations, in sequence etc to maximize their potential for improved vector control and insecticide resistance management.
She is currently the Principal Investigator of several vector control research projects in Benin including a large-scale community trials evaluating the efficacy of VECTRON T500, a newly developed IRS products for malaria vector control and for the UNITAID-funded large scale community randomised trials to assess the durability of newly developed dual AI insecticide treated nets (New Net Project) . She is also leading several other malaria research projects in Benin such as the PMI Insights project (MaCRA) investigating the interpretation and reporting of malaria RDTs in Benin and the UNITAID-funded Plus project study evaluating the impact of perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC) in Benin.
