Ms Kathleen Mcgee

Research Student - MPhil/PhD - Public Health & Policy

United Kingdom

I am a health economist with over ten years of research experience providing technical assistance and guidance in health policy, planning, evaluation, and strategic resource allocation.

My career journey has been multifaceted, initially focusing on national research studies and implementing monitoring and evaluation systems for national HIV programs. I have conducted extensive population studies, especially among key populations, and helped inform evidence-based practices in HIV self-testing through systematic reviews.

Currently, my work is centered on the field of health economics, particularly in the community-led HIV response in Western Africa. My work involves conducting costing studies and developing guidance for costing HIV community-led responses and National HIV strategic plans. This allows me to leverage my expertise in HIV programs to contribute to broader health economic strategies and sustainable healthcare interventions.

Research

My PhD research is focused on investigating the costs associated with the HIV community-led response, with a specific emphasis on understanding both the financial aspects and in-kind contributions from communities. This research aims to shed light on the economic dynamics of community involvement in healthcare initiatives and to better support the inclusion of community responses in future policy and resource allocation decisions.

My current projects include: (i) Conducting costing studies on the community-led HIV response in Sierra Leone and Togo, (ii) Developing UNAIDS costing and budgeting guidelines tailored for community-led HIV responses and community-led monitoring, (iii) Undertaking a systematic review to compile and analyze reported costs related to the community HIV response.

My previous research centered on HIV self-testing, including projects such as costing HIV self-testing distribution in Eswatini and conducting systematic reviews on its use in healthcare facilities and by caregivers. These efforts supported the World Health Organization (WHO) in crafting international testing guidelines.
