I am an epidemiologist working in electronic health record (EHR) research. My experience with EHRs covers observational and interventional research, and most recently linking curated observational data to the EHR. Rather than specializing in a specific disease area, I have worked in research that capitalises on the strengths of EHRs. This includes (i) making best use of the data for observational research; (ii) using EHR data for pragmatic, data enabled trials to increase the efficiency and reduce the costs of interventional studies; and (iii) undertaking novel studies, collecting new data that we can link to EHRs.

Teaching
I have been teaching on in-house and distance learning modules since 2007, including Extended Epidemiology, STEPH, ASME, PEPI, ICEMS, DANES, EPM103, EPM202 and EPM500. I currently teach on EPM103, EPM202 and EPM500, and lecture on the short course in Real World Pharmacoepidemiology.
I have been a module organiser for EPM500 (the DL MSc Epidemiology project module) since 2019.

Research
My research has predominantly focused on using observational data from the UK to address questions in cardiovascular disease prevention. My recently completed NIHR fellowship used EHRs from the UK (CPRD) and New Zealand (PREDICT) to understand how blood pressure lowering could be managed differently in England. As part of this work, we developed a Stata algorithm to calculate QRISK2 scores in CPRD. I have also worked on projects investigating statins for cardiovascular disease prevention, and alcohol recording in the CPRD. More recently I have worked in OpenSAFELY on a project examining mental health outcomes during the pandemic among people living alone, compared to those not living alone.
I am co-PI of the NIHR funded OpenPROMPT study - which is a novel study linking data collected from a mobile app to the EHR. This is a collaboration between epidemiologists and health economists at LSHTM, OpenSAFELY and GP software providers TPP.
I am also interested in pragmatic trials set within the electronic health record, and ways that we can use EHRs to support aspects of trials, for example for feasibility, recruitment and follow-up.
