I hold degrees in Nutritional Sciences (Licenciatura, University of Porto), Public Health (MSc, University of Porto), and Epidemiology and Population Health (PhD, LSHTM).

I joined the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiology in 2013. Prior to joining LSHTM, I taught Epidemiology at the University of Porto Medical School. I also worked as a Research Fellow at the Public Health Institute, where I looked into the determinants of gastric and oesophageal cancers, and secular trends of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, in Portugal.

Teaching

I co-organise the MSc module ‘Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases’ for the intensive MSc programmes, and I facilitate practical sessions of ‘Extended Epidemiology’ in the Autumn. 

I supervise MSc projects of the MSc in Epidemiology program, and I tutor students of the MSc in Epidemiology and MSc in Health Data Science. 

 

I co-supervise two doctoral students: a DrPH looking at barriers to colorectal cancer screening in Malaysia, and a PhD student investigating respiratory outcomes in cancer survivors in the UK. 

Research
My research focuses on the use of electronic health records, which are routinely collected in primary care practices and hospitals in the UK, to study whether cancer survivors have different outcomes compared to people who did not have cancer. I am also interested in the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer survivorship, and have been involved in several studies including outcomes in cancer survivors.
