As a Research Fellow in the Clinical Trials Unit at LSHTM, I provide epidemiological expertise on several international randomised controlled trials investigating the effectiveness of tranexamic acid (TXA) for the prevention and treatment of life-threatening bleeding. These include the WOMAN-2 trial for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage in anaemic women and the CRASH-4 trial of intramuscular TXA for mild head injury in older adults. I am the Principal Investigator of the I'M WOMAN trial which aims to assess the effects of intramuscular compared to intravenous TXA for postpartum haemorrhage.

I previously worked on the CRASH-3 trial of TXA for intracranial haemorrhage and the HALT-IT trial for gastrointestinal haemorrhage. As the LSHTM CTU PPI Lead, I organised and facilitated focus groups discussions and surveys, co-produced a patient-reported outcome measure, and collaborated with organisations representing patients and the public.

Before joining the School, I worked in the Cancer Screening and Prevention Research Group at Imperial College London. I have a BSc in Biological Sciences from Imperial College London, an MSc and PhD in Epidemiology from LSHTM, and over a decade of clinical research experience. I have a PhD byPublication on outcome measures in clinical trials of tranexamic acid for bleeding.

Research

My current research is focused on increasing equitable access to tranexamic acid, inlcuding finding alternative routes of TXA administration for the treatment and prevention of postpartum haemorrhage.

The TRANSFORM project is generating evidence and demand, raising awareness, and addressing supply issues to ensure tranexamic acid access for all mothers with bleeding after childbirth. The I’M WOMAN trial, part of the TRANSFORM project, is looking at easier and more accessible ways to give TXA – intramuscularly, rather than intravenously – with the aim of expanding access to timely TXA treatment.

I am also interested in methodological issues in emergency care trials, outcome measures, the pathophysiology of bleeding, the relationship between anaemia, pain and fibrinolysis, patient and public involvement in research, women's rights and obstetric violence.

I am the Project Lead of the TRANSFORM project (Tranexamic acid access for all mothers with bleeding after childbirth) and Principal Investigator of the I'M WOMAN trial, funded by Unitaid.
