Dr Laura Braun

As part of the Environmental Health Group, I co-ordinate two research studies: TISA in northern Senegal and SaniVac in Mozambique. The TISA trial is assessing the effectiveness of a simple WASH kit in terms of severe acute malnutrition recovery rates in children, and is run in collaboration with Action Contre la Faim. The SaniVac study in Maputo is evaluating the impact of sanitation on health among children living in dense urban areas of Maputo. I also lead a research project evaluating the impact of extreme weather events on schistosomiasis transmission in Madagascar.

Prior to joining LSHTM, I completed my PhD at Imperial College London as part of the WISER project. The research determined the effectiveness of water treatment processes against schistosome cercariae, the parasite larvae that lead to schistosomiasis infection. I hold a Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University and a Master's degree from Imperial College London.

Teaching
At LSHTM, I am a Module Organiser for the WASH and Health module, and lecture on the Diploma in Tropical Nursing (DTN) and Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTMH).

I also co-supervise/tutor PhD and MSc students at LSHTM, Imperial College London and Aberystwyth University.

Research
My main research interest is the link between WASH and NTDs, especially schistosomiasis, and how climate change affects transmission.
