I'm a GP and global health analyst trained at Bristol University, Harvard School of Public Health, the Kennedy School of Government, MIT, and Oxford. My policy work, research, and advocacy focus on advancing Primary Health Care (PHC) by integrating public health and primary care, with a special emphasis on non-communicable diseases and the commercial determinants of health. I'm passionate about social justice; especially tackling unjust social structures, exploitation, and inequity.
My current work at the school uses mixed-methods implementation research to reduce inequitable access to community health services in Botswana, Kenya, India and Nepal.
I co-lead the LSHTM PHC Group with the excellent Luisa Pettigrew and Jo Exley. I also work closely with WHO colleagues and high-level policymakers on extending global access to high-quality primary care. I'm fortunate enough to have worked closely with tens of ministries of health and finance in high-, middle- and low-income settings, often as a WHO or World Bank consultant. Recent projects have focused on strengthening assess to essential services in Libya, Yemen, and Sudan.
I completed my Academic Clinical Fellowship in Oxford and continue to work in the city as a part-time family physician. I sit on the RCGP Thames Valley Faculty board and I'm an editorial board member at the British Journal of General Practice; the world's highest ranked primary care journal. I'm the international lead for the Faculty of Public Health special interest group on Primary Care and Public Health.
During the pandemic I set up Healthier Systems Ltd, a dynamic global health research consultancy that uses cutting edge mixed-methods to advance health for all.
Working at the boundary of policy, research, and practice requires clear, consistent communication. I have published close to 100 peer-reviewed papers, and regularly write for newspapers and magazines like the New Scientist, the Independent, the Economist and the Financial Times. I have spoken at two UN General Assembly side events and discussed health policy on China Global TV, BBC news and Radio 4.
